Session Type: Symposium
The session will explore the role of unions and teachers in efforts to standardize and routinize practice, increase teacher engagement and buy-in, and improve instruction. Drawing on in-depth surveys of teachers and union personnel, and grounded case studies, topics covered include union-management partnerships and their influence on teacher exchange, the drivers of teacher decisions to abandon individual efforts to customize curricular materials in favor of collective co-production of materials, critical evaluation, and customization, and the specific role of teacher advice networks in the transition to instructional practice aligned with the Common Core. The session will conclude with a discussion of how teacher policies can be enhanced by wider efforts to meaningfully engage teachers.
