70.058 - A Dream Deferred: A 20-Year Retrospective on Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

Abstract
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) is a research-based model that has increasingly become a part of instruction reform efforts in K-12 education through a variety of forms. CRP provides an opportunity for school districts to exemplify excellent teaching. However, CRP variants have co-opted the model by diluting or removing the discussion of issues of culture and race in education and how they intersect. These variants lack empirical evidence to support their effectiveness, yet they are filling a niche in K-12 education and are not producing the expected outcomes. This symposium is designed to push back against the co-optation of CRP, highlight current empirical work with the model, and engage participants in a critical conversation about advancing CRP with fidelity.
