Session Type: Symposium
Strides in urban education—turning a school district around or working within a district to strengthen it—requires a strong focus on positive attitudes, forward movement and sound decision-making. Freire’s notion of radical love, based on the idea that meaningful goals and aims can be accomplished through love, passion, and commitment to a person, a group, an issue or a cause, positions this type of positive approach as the centerpiece of urban advancement in education. Working through love and the spirit of love can provide the much needed foundation for success. At the core of education, particularly in urban districts, are students whose emotional, social and cognitive needs require radical love. This symposium addresses the possibilities for transformation.
