Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents multiple perspectives on the implementation of Poetry Inside Out (PIO) as a site for the development of critical language awareness. Four papers analyze different facets of teacher and student discourse and, together, address the overall questions that guide the research: What are the key features of PIO that promote critical language awareness in both teachers and students? Under what circumstances does language awareness become a form of social action? These papers address the challenges and possibilities of supporting critical language awareness in action – within the classroom, and as an enduring aspect of students’ identities in the world. The symposium is structured with empirical papers, audience participation in translating a poem, and discussant remarks.
