In response to pressures on schools to increase student achievement, schools have increasingly relied on instructional coaches to mitigate the policy demands and that which takes place in classrooms. While the research on coaching is growing, there is still much to be desired in terms of realizing the roles, responsibilities, and impact of teacher leaders. The authors of these papers have employed multiple analytic and methodological approaches to understand the mentor teacher role (i.e., a teacher leader who serves both as a classroom teacher and peer coach/evaluator). Collectively, the papers address the daily operations, challenges, balancing of responsibilities, impact on student achievement, and levels of job satisfaction of more than 450 mentor teachers across 12 school districts.
