Session Type: Symposium
Current trends in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education have given rise to what Moon and Singer (2012) describe as a diffuse use of the term, “not only do we have numerous definitions of STEM, but we also have branded numerous entities to be STEM-councils, STEM-schools, STEM-networks, and STEM-curricula” (p.24). While the desire to join the fast moving STEM train is upon us, the absence of a moment to pause and reflect can have far reaching consequences (Rodriguez, 2014). The proposed symposium is an opportunity to pause and reflect by examining three perspectives: preschoolers learning STEM through popular media, indigenous populations and place-based STEM, and pre-service teachers and children co-teaching and co-learning in a STEM setting.
