Session Type: Structured Poster Session
Belonging plays an important role in predicting present and future engagement, thereby influencing persistence, well-being, academic performance, and career outcomes. This structured poster session provides highlights of a five year, NSF-funded study on how belonging at various levels in higher education is associated with and contributes to multiple forms of academic engagement in STEM disciplines. Five institutionally and geographically diverse institutions are a part of this study and have generated results that span a broad range of student experiences, college cultures, and demographics. Highlights include the central role that belonging plays in behavioral and emotional engagement as well as the influence of institution type, extracurricular activities, and faculty interactions on students’ sense of belonging.
