Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents research that examine factors that influence the educational pathway of Latina/o and immigrant students. Panelists challenge deficit frameworks of Latina/o and immigrant students’ educational access and mobility to address educational justice by offering new insights on non cognitive factors and math achievement as a predictor for college acceptance and participation, high stakes testing and college aspiration, validation experiences of immigrant origin students and faculty and
its impact on student persistence, and the relationship between academic and social engagement factors on the educational outcomes of immigrant community college students. There will be an opportunity for dialogue regarding advancing the discourse for Latina/o and immigrant students and the need to move towards using asset based theoretical frameworks in education research.
