Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have not yet yielded the “revolution” that captured the public imagination at their 2012 emergence, but they have initiated new cross-university research efforts that are yielding insights into the uses and affordances of MOOCs. In a moderated panel discussion, education researchers who have worked with MOOCs combine their diverse disciplinary expertise in reflecting on five key topics: The current state of MOOC research; the responsibility of researchers to advance science in a way that integrates with policy and technology to reduce inequities in access and quality of postsecondary education; fair and privacy-respecting research using learner data; best principles for intra- and inter-institutional research collaboration; and future directions for research on MOOCs and online courses.
