49.021 - Division E Fireside Chat. Navigating AERA Special Interest Groups: A Discussion of Participation and Benefits

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Bronze Level, Columbian

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

From the AERA website, “Special Interest Groups (SIGs) provide a forum within AERA for the involvement of individuals drawn together by a common interest in a field of study, teaching, or research when the existing divisional structure may not directly facilitate such activity.” However, with over 130 SIGs to choose from, where does a member begin? This session aims to offer attendees an understanding of how and why participating in SIGs can enrich involvement in an AERA member’s field of interest. Specifically, this session will provide graduate students and other scholars with: (a) an introduction into SIGs, (b) an overview of membership participation in SIGs, and (c) an opportunity to learn more about the activities of specific AERA SIGs.
