Students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) face unique
challenges at school that may elevate their level of educational, psychological and health risk (e.g.,
Bontempo & D’Augelli, 2002; Grossman & D’Augelli, 2006; Kosciw et al., 2013; Robinson & Espelage,
2011, 2012; Russell et al., 2012). In recent years, increased public focus on and legislation targeting
LGBTQ youths likely improved school experiences for some LGBTQ youths; however, elevated risk
levels persist, suggesting that improvements on average do not imply improvements for all. This
symposium will bring together experts on LGBTQ research to discuss: (1) progress that has been made
for LGBTQ youths over the past two decades; (2) areas where more progress is needed; (3) unstudied (or
understudied) social justice issues for LGBTQ youths; and (4) challenges and opportunities for studying
LGBTQ youths, from a variety of methodological perspectives (Mayo, 2007; Robinson-Cimpian, 2014).
Importantly, the symposium panelists represent a diverse set of methodological perspectives.
