Critical participatory action research by/with educators has animated a social movement of intellectual and ethical power that builds critical curriculum, raises issues of social (in)justice and cultivates solidarities between educators and youth/schools and communities, across power lines of race/ethnicity and class. In this discussion I am interested in the profound material and existential contradictions educators face, and interrogate, in their daily practice, in their political relation to metric madness and in the elegance and passion of collective teacher research. Drawing on the legacy of Maxine Greene and the growing movement of teacher research to remain “wide awake,” I hope to engage a conversation with educators about researching what is, and what must be.
