Undergraduate Students' Attitudes Toward and Experiences With Introductory Research Methods

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

The purpose of this mixed methods study is to understand the experiences of students taking an introductory research methods course. Attitudes toward research were assessed pre- and post-course and students were interviewed about their experiences in the course at the semester midpoint. Pilot study results indicated no change in attitude after the course was over. Interviewed students did not report any significant course experiences - to them it was just another course. The one thing they reported was a desire for more hands-on learning, "experiencing research" as part of the course. Implications for teaching research methods and for research on the teaching and learning of research methods will be addressed.
