Coordinate systems are often used as representational tools for reasoning with mathematical concepts. However, little focus is given to students’ construction of coordinate systems and how students use their coordinate systems in reasoning, especially at the secondary level. This paper presents data from a study investigating two ninth grade students’ constructions of coordinate systems and the type of reasoning that might engender strong meanings for coordinate systems. Findings from a teaching experiment and the implications of these findings will be discussed
