Probably Trivial but Apparently Not Obvious: Mixed-Methods Research as a Matter of Levels of Explanation and Units of Analysis

Abstract

The development of the mixed methods paradigm has evidenced the need for ordering the multiplicity and complexity of both quantitative and qualitative research methods and their combination in social and educational research. The aim of the paper is to explore an approach focusing on creating a typology of the explanation of social phenomena based on the distinction of levels of analysis and in particular on a typology of units of analysis initially developed by Galtung (1970). We used the interplay between individual units of analysis and types of sets of units, on the one hand, and the distinction between case-centred and variable-centred analysis, on the other, to explore options of explanation.
