Combining Research, Evaluation, and Leadership Skills in Doctoral Programs: A Mixed-Methods Research Project

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Cohort based doctoral degrees are now common and most require one to three research courses. The ‘New-Doctoral-Leadership-Program’ requires seven mixed, action, qualitative, and quantitative seminars and 18 credits of program evaluation, policy analysis, and grant writing. (RQ-1) Does the ‘New-Doctoral-Leadership-Program’ meet admitted students’ needs? From a critical stance, cohort based online programs are designed to save institutions money rather than improve necessary skills. An Iterative Mixed Methods research design was used to create a program that meets the needs of a highly competitive postsecondary job market. Course and faculty evaluations, comprehensive examinations, and dissertations were analyzed to determine strengths and challenges. The study’s findings, methodological maps, and graphic dissertation overviews will be presented as evidence of how strategies are working.
