Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to present the main findings from the European funded project: “Early School Leaving and Second Chance Education, ESSE project”. The paper consists of two main parts. The first part focuses on the formulation of the definition of the concept of early school leaving, presentation of the scale of the ESL in Europe and on answering a question: How can the complex and interplay of factors on a macro, meso and micro level predict early school leaving? In the second part of the paper the attention is paid on answering the question: What prevention, intervention or compensation measures can be identified as successful in reducing ESL in European countries?
