Examining Critical Incidents Leading to School Change

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This research presents on findings from case studies of 10 turnaround schools involved in a comprehensive school reform focused on low-performing schools. A variation of the Critical Incident Technique was used to generate reports of key events and experiences resulting in school improvement. Several critical incidents were reported including reducing class size, enhancing teacher collaboration, implementing new student interventions, building local accountability, establishing student rewards systems, using data more effectively, and strengthening leadership. Findings can be used broadly by other practitioners and policymakers seeking to stimulate quality improvement.
