Examining the Goals and Needs of Families and School People: School Improvement in the Urban School Using Culturally Relevant Parent/Family Engagement

Abstract

The researcher uses critical, post colonial, and narrative methods to question the
assumptions within activist/community oriented civic engagement approaches by
comparing and contrasting encounters with community members (families & parents)
with school people (elementary teachers) as she attempted to support ongoing climate
change in inner-city American school among a mostly African-American community.The
purpose of this poster or paper session is to describe and analyze that work and to
examine more closely the somewhat different perspectives that emerged from parents and
teachers in survey data and observations after the project was completed.
