Over the last twenty years, the numbers of same-sex couples becoming parents has been on a steady rise, and with recent progress in favor of marriage equality, those numbers are likely to continue to increase. In spite of the growing population of families led by same-sex parents, research on parents’ experiences as they navigate education systems for their children has been relatively scarce. This paper intends to help fill this gap in parental involvement and family engagement research by developing a theoretical framework for researching gay and lesbian parents’ experiences with their children’s schooling, and providing a critical review of existing literature drawing from academic fields in education, sociology, and psychology.
