This paper is a critical review and evaluation of a module in an Initial Teacher Education programme in an Irish art college. Through the production of original artworks, graduate students give personal responses to the values and foundational beliefs evident at key moments in 20th century Irish education history and policy. The art projects take various forms – 2D or 3D work in a variety of media, digital media projects or performative pieces. Students have chosen to address such issues as Irish language, corporal punishment, censorship, gender, sexuality, special needs and religion in Irish education. In presenting some of these artworks, the paper provides a critical commentary on the potential of the creative arts to inform teacher education programmes.
