65.013 - Transforming Research: The Indigenous Struggle for Social, Cultural, and Economic Justice Within and Through Education

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Gold Level, Grand CDEF

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

This presentation will look at the struggle to change educational outcomes for indigenous and disadvantaged communities. Of concern is the need to challenge the ongoing reproduction of high and disproportionate levels of learning underdevelopment and subsequent social and economic marginalization. It is not just a question of understanding what might be problematic, but also a need to understand what might be done to transform the situation. In this presentation I share some strategies from the New Zealand context that has the potential for wider applications, including the development of alternative schooling and higher education models. This address will be of interest to all educators interested in seeking more socially just outcomes within and through education and schooling.
