Abstract

“Masturbatory dreams,” Ivan Illich’s metaphor for speaking about the nightmare of global schooling needs to be unpacked. Our paper will unpack a metaphor—“masturbatory dreams” employed by Illich to unmask the self-promotional, self-serving and self-aggrandizing growth of professional, corporate, and governmental power over common women, children and men.
