In previous research we argued that while the Writer’s/Reader’s Workshop has the potential to move literacy education toward critical literacy and education for social justice, it fails to reach its full potential in this regard. In this paper we focus on how the application of one of three forms of educational discourse that we identify in our forthcoming book, namely, the discourse of praxis, can assist in creating possibilities for this. Having examined their work, we conclude that by employing a discourse of praxis Duncan-Andrade and Morrell provide guidance in this regard. They adopt a critical pedagogy perspective, address issues of social justice, advocacy, activism, and the Freirean commitment to education for realizing our vocation to become more fully human.
