Planning and Implementing a Distance Learning Course for Art-Making as a Collaborative Meaning-Making Process

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to demystify the image of the artist working in the solitary confinement of a studio for self expression. We describe the premises that guided the design and development of an artmaking project in the context of a graduate distance learning course for artmaking as a collaborative meaning making process, and the participants’ discourse that took place based on that end. The results from analyzing participants’ interactions indicate that with the appropriate motivation and guidance, students can move beyond self-expression towards a collaborative development of big ideas and a solid knowledge base for artmaking, problem-finding and problem solving, setting boundaries for artmaking, and negotiated meaningful artmaking.
