Institutional Histories of Three Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Mississippi: A Micro-Level Illustration of Civil Rights Movement Activism

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal BC

Abstract

This paper investigates the portrayal of civil rights activism at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Mississippi, by examining three commissioned institutional histories. These three publications serve as a micro-level illustration of civil rights activism, and are largely ignored within the existing literature. This paper aims to explore how these institutional histories “tell the stories” of civil rights activism on their individual campuses – to add to the existing macro-level historical accounts of civil rights activism.
