Using the New General Ability Index for Preschool Gifted Screening

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This validity study compares the newly revised Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI–IV) General Ability Index (GAI) score to a variety of scores from the established Differential Ability Scales-Second Edition (DAS-II) in an effort to investigate the GAI’s utility in determining cognitive potential and as a preschool screener for high ability. There was evidence supporting the validity of the WPPSI-IV GAI score for these purposes when compared to the DAS-II scores, including the overall DAS-II General Conceptual Ability (GCA) score. The ease and rapidity of administration of the GAI, coupled with the GAI casting a wider net of students identified as having gifted potential make the GAI very appealing for preschool screening.
