This presentation will report an ongoing design-based research project that examines how domain-specific learning can be intrinsically integrated into gameplay to foster the development of disciplinary proficiency while sustaining the playability. In particular, we examined the design of math integration in the quests of architectural design and modeling in Earthquake Rebuild, a 3D architecture game that aims to promote the versatile representation and epistemic practice of mathematics for middle-school students. Data were collected from iterative expert review and user testing. The findings to be presented include contextualized, analytical generalizations on the learning affordance and playability of four salient game-design specifications – alternative gameplay modes, the granularity level, the perspective design, and the design of learning scaffold as an intermediary interface.
