As part of a youth initiative partnership, university educational researchers worked collaboratively with a public school system, the local government and courts, faith-based organizations, and private businesses in a suburban community. These groups expressed the need for a holistic approach to child development and well-being through the integration of family, school, and community partnerships. We used a mixed-methods case study design based upon asset and needs-assessment surrounding the well-being of children and families. This research uncovered multiple perspectives on healthy community relationships, as well as embedded tensions and contradictions within organizational, institutional, school, and family structures. Finally, we build upon collaborative relationships that are both empowering and transformational, and simultaneously problematize superficial misconceptions of unity in communities.
