The Convergence and Predictive Value of Four Self-Regulated Learning Measurement Formats

Abstract

The authors examined the convergence and predictive value of four self-regulated learning (SRL) measurements types (self-report questionnaires, teacher ratings, SRL microanalysis, and behavioral traces) situated within a mathematics context. The convergence of these measures was examined across task-difficulty and the predictive value was examined for three distinct mathematics outcomes ranging from task-specific to domain-specific. Participants included 97 eighth graders. Results displayed that microanalytic strategy-use related to behavioral traces, microanalytic strategy-use and behavioral traces related to teacher ratings when examining a difficult but not an easy task, and questionnaires correlated only with teacher ratings. Microanalytic metacognitive-monitoring was significantly predictive of all outcomes. However, behavior traces also predicted a task-specific outcome, but teacher ratings were the strongest predictors of more global outcomes.
