School Improvement Grant Strategies and Approaches: An Analysis of Higher- and Lower-Performing Cohort 1 K–8 California Schools

Abstract

The California Comprehensive Center and the Center on School Turnaround conducted an analysis to identify two different types of California Cohort I K-8 School Improvement Grant (SIG) schools– those demonstrating notable positive changes in student achievement, and those demonstrating little or no changes—to learn more about what contributed to these disparate outcomes. How did they differ? Did they approach SIG differently? Did they use different strategies? In this session, we will share our methodology for identifying, selecting, and collecting data from these schools, as well as report on the strategies and factors most often cited as contributing to schools’ turnaround successes and challenges. This information will contribute to the discussion of strategies and supports for turning around low-performing schools.
