Enrollment Trends: An Analysis of One Urban District's Use of Different Types of Secondary Schools

Abstract

The current education landscape is comprised of a variety of school environments including traditional (neighborhood) schools, as well as a variety of alternative models that focus on innovative practices, behavior remediation, or academic recovery. This manuscript uses one large urban school district to analyze school type enrollment patterns with regard to student gender, race, socioeconomic, and disability status. The results of this descriptive analysis serve as powerful commentary to which students tend to be served and where within the public school system. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.
