Going to College: Exploring Key Supports and Resources Used in Chicago's Nonselective High Schools

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

AERA's Toward Justice conference theme is suitable considering the college for all efforts in Chicago (our conference site) after decades of overtly selecting and sorting students. One effort is the marked increase in non-selective college preparatory schools, both charter and regular public schools. The objective of this study is to understand these schools' best practices or key activities, instructional methods, and support systems that help urban students prepare academically, socially and financially for college. Findings from staff interviews suggest that schools are intentional about preparing urban students for college, but their intentionality varies by the context of the school and the depth of the mission.
