Movies as a Tool Training Multicultural Counselors

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Confined by mono-cultural geographic features or encapsulated life experience, many counselor training programs or trainees suffer from the lack of a multicultural environment which could benefit students’ education. Recognizing the limitations in reality and the needs for counterbalancing the disadvantages, this qualitative inquiry examined the use of movies with 17 master-level counselor trainees outside the classroom. Four assertions emerged from their reflection data, implying the potential of helping trainees vicariously reach the culmination of studies in counseling via the pedagogical application of popular films in the context of cross-cultural counseling. Limitation of the present study and suggestions for future research regarding this teaching method are presented.
