Gaps exist in achievement between advantaged and disadvantaged students (USDOE, 2001). Therefore, it is important to explore, particularly within the most disadvantaged schools, what factors influence student outcomes.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of students’ initiation of alcohol use to school and classroom behavior. We hypothesized those students who initiate alcohol will respond be attending school less and engage in more negative school conduct. A longitudinal investigation of school outcomes in relation to alcohol initiation during adolescence in an at risk population was conducted. We find that adolescents do increase in these negative behaviors after they initiate alcohol. Implications of results are also discussed
