This study examines a new state-led initiative in Massachusetts aimed at improving educational outcomes for English language learners through intensive summer academic and enrichment programs. Pre- and post-test data demonstrated stability or gains in level in English language skills for the majority of participants at all three program sites included in the study. The qualitative analysis explores participants’ evaluation of design elements and implementation strategies at same three sites. This study provides evidence of the benefits of providing English language instruction and academic enrichment to ELLs during the summer. The final section of the full paper offers recommendations for effective implementation of academic summer interventions.
