Student Responses to a Critical Multicultural Curriculum in the Science Fiction Elective Classroom

Abstract

This research observes how high school students in Science Fiction elective classroom receive the integration of a critical multicultural curriculum. Such observations involve two sections of a Science Fiction course at “North High School” in a medium-sized city in Wisconsin. Such critical multicultural curriculum integration has two central aims. The first is to expand a curriculum considered by many to be dominated by white male writers and readers, while perhaps welcoming more students of color into a classroom that otherwise may not speak to them. Secondly, the study seeks to engage students in discussions around race from critical multicultural perspective. Although difficult, such discussions are essential to living in an increasingly diverse world.
