Youth as Social and Artistic Actors in and Beyond Schools

Abstract

This paper will report on a five-year multi-sited collaborative, ethnographic, mixed methods study focussing on youth artistic practices in schools in Toronto, Canada; Boston, USA; Lucknow, India and Taipei, Taiwan. Using a hybrid methodology of quantitative work embedded within a qualitative ethnography and of live and digital performance across school sites, the research was concerned with questions of school (dis)engagement, as experienced by young people often marked as ‘disadvantaged’ and ‘marginal’ to the traditional practices of schooling.
