A goal in learning analytics is to understand how real-time data can support teachers in monitoring their students' work, and in deciding on the most appropriate instructional interventions. This paper reports on an early phase of the design of a real-time dashboard within a web-based science inquiry learning environment for middle and high school classrooms. We facilitated teachers' explorations of a working dashboard prototype during a professional development workshop. Based on their documented discussions and reflections, we describe several ways that teachers identified using the information displayed to inform their instruction. This paper has implications for our continued design, and more generally, for the design of information displays to support teaching and learning.
