Using Sketchbooks for Teacher Inquiry: Developing a Critical Arts-Based Practice

Abstract

This practitioner research examines one aspect of my arts-integrated pedagogy: using sketchbooks for teacher inquiry in an early pre-service teacher education program. In this work I argue that sketchbooks offer a unique space for teachers, practicing and (early) pre-service, to develop an inquiry stance, one that supports teachers as intellectuals who use the arts to raise questions critical to practice. A close examination of selected student work demonstrates how cultivating a sketchbook practice supports the development of culturally responsive teaching.
