Teachers Who Were Homeschooled

Sat, April 9, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Liberty Salon J

Abstract

A premise of Lortie’s (1975) “apprenticeship of observation” is that teachers had experience as students in school settings. A qualitative study of four homeschooled teacher preparation candidates was undertaken to understand how they learned mathematics as students and how they tempered this with their teacher preparation program learning. Findings indicate that not all homeschooling experiences are positive. Analysis of the experiences reveals themes of mother as teacher, few teacher models, individualized instruction, benefits of having many students in a classroom, and less anxiety about learning and teaching math.
