Leading Schools of Education in the Era of Academic Capitalism: Deans' Responses to State Policy Changes

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

In summer 2013, the North Carolina General Assembly eliminated a provision in the state budget that automatically increased by ten percent the salary of teachers who received master’s degrees. This and other education policy changes and proposals affect schools of education throughout the state by negatively influencing interest and enrollment in education programs. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand the strategic responses of school of education deans in the University of North Carolina system to such political and economic challenges.
