Fri, April 8, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section A

Abstract

The aim is to present and discuss some results of an investigation about teachers' conceptions concerning public school democratic management in a Brazilian municipal elementary school. Based on a qualitative and exploratory research framework, having as instruments questionnaires and interviews, it was possible to collect data on the subjects’ conceptions on autonomy and participation, basic principles of democratic management. The results show that teachers’ conceptions were built throughout their personal and academic lives, in a permanent process. It was also found that in their perspective, democratic management must be someway organized by school leaders and councils and that it is fundamental to achieve higher quality of teaching and learning.
