Electronic portfolios are again gaining traction serving dual roles in teacher evaluation and professional development. Portfolios have long been used to foster reflection and professional learning among practicing teachers, which is pertinent with many states adopting the Next Generation Science Standards. The expectations NGSS sets for students have direct implications for science instruction. We piloted an innovative type of e-portfolio that enables science teachers to capture evidence (i.e. documents, pictures, video) of key aspects of classroom practice linked to the NGSS standards (e.g. classroom discourse, investigations) in “real time” using a tablet. We discuss the conceptual foundation and development of the tablet portfolio in connection to NGSS, exploring its potential implications and benefits for supporting science teachers’ reflection and growth.
