This paper focuses on collaborative research, in line with the AERA 2016 annual theme ‘Public scholarship to educate diverse democracies’. Collaborative research with communities and educators positions research as a means “to inform civic participation, engagement and organized action”. The paper reports on a project funded by the New Zealand ‘Teaching and Learning Research Initiative’ (TLRI) programme. The TLRI project is collaborative and cross-sector. It involves teacher researchers working with university-based researchers; the overarching aim of the project is to strengthen children’s transition journeys in indigenous language education settings. This paper focuses on assessment-related practices and how these can be strengthened to support transitions.
