Abstract

The detrimental consequences for victims of bullying are well established. However little attention is given to the relationship between bullying and sexual minority status including Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB) young people in England. The aim of this paper is to address this gap. To do this Next Steps, a nationally representative longitudinal dataset, is used. The relationship between sexual identity and experiences of bullying are modelled when the young person is aged 19, in addition to identifying the associated effects of being bullied on life satisfaction. Taking advantage of the longitudinal nature of Next Steps the association between being bullied during compulsory schooling and life satisfaction at age 19 is also estimated. Implications of the findings are discussed.
