Community initiatives that intersect arts learning and digital media are increasingly recognized as a way of promoting individual growth, democratic participation, and community development throughout the world (Asthana, 2006). Knowledge production through the arts has promoted active dialogue within the discourses of contemporary art and education. Of special interest are the ways in which youth knowledge production and development via the arts promote wider community engagement. This paper examines how urban youth participating in a community-based filmmaking program in Vancouver, British Columbia have developed artistic and technical skills, enhanced their well-being and relationships, and contributed to the wider community.
