Uncovering the Stressors of STEM Education and Research: An Exploration of Case Studies for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Abstract

The purpose of this proposal is to present two methods used in an attempt to uncover the stressors within STEM education and research using interview protocols around academic emotions and journey mapping techniques. The case studies found that the Latino students in STEM experienced a greater incidence of stress and anxiety as they navigated in their degree. This study highlights the importance of understanding the emotional stressors that affect the experiences of undergraduate and graduate students in STEM as these experiences can significantly impact their desires to persist.
