An Exploratory Study of Jamaican Immigrant Parents' Child Disciplinary Practices

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

Little is known about the child disciplinary techniques of Jamaican immigrants in the United States. Much of what is assumed has been extrapolated from studies using samples domiciled in Jamaica and focused primarily on physical discipline. The current study investigated the child discipline techniques of first generation Jamaican immigrant parents to the United States. The findings presented, challenge the prevailing assumption about the universal use of corporal punishment among Jamaican parents. The findings indicate that Jamaican immigrant parents used a wide variety of child discipline techniques, with frequency of use varying by parents’ gender and age group of child. Recommendations and future research are offered.
