The SPARK (Spiraling Assessment to Reinforce Knowledge) testing method is designed to enhance the learning experience. Knowledge of unfamiliar constructs is assessed simultaneously with previously learned material. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the SPARK testing method on students enrolled in educational psychology. Students in the treatment group were assessed with SPARK and students in the control group with unit tests. All students took the same comprehensive final at the end of the semester. Students in the treatment group scored significantly higher on the final exam than those in the control group. Results of this study have important implications for the application of research related to pretesting, the testing effect, and testing frequency.
